DAVAO CITY, September 10, (PIA)- The City Council today suspended its 10th session due to a magnitude 5.8 earthquake that hit east of Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental.
Councilor Alberto Ungab who presided the session conferred with the senior city councilors and sergeant at arms before coming up with the decision to suspend the session.
He explained that it was a collective decision to assess the condition of the building.
"I cannot gamble on the lives of all the people who are in the session hall. The engineers have to assess the building and for the meantime, we have to adjourn the session," Ungab said.
Councilor J. Melchor Quitan Jr., Majority-Floor Leader said that with the recent disasters in the news, it is best to give premium on the safety of the people.
He said it could have been better that all people in the building vacated after the shaking.
Quitain said that in reality, only a few people did the duck, cover and hold protocol, but people did not leave immediately, instead stayed in the building after the earthquake subsided.
"Though it was a delayed reaction we remain concerned for the safety of everyone, especially if there were aftershocks," he said.
Quitain said all pending issues for resolution at the City Council will be discussed next Tuesday.
He said the items at hand were not so controversial that they needed thorough discussion.
Based on the Phivolcs earthquake advisory, the tremor was felt at intensity IV in Davao City area. (Dalumpines, Joey Sem G.)
