Cape Town - Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes the current Manchester United squad have potential but he does not see them emulating the Red Devils of yesteryear.
United's 2019/20 season began with a convincing 4-0 home victory over rivals Chelsea but have since shown glimpses of a team under construction.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's charges then suffered a draw in a winnable match against Wolves before Crystal Palace stifled the new-look United team in front of Old Trafford.
Before the international break, United then earned a point at Southampton.
Wenger says that he is not entirely convinced that the current players can go all the way to challenge Liverpool and Manchester City for Premier League honours.
"When you see Man Utd, they are one of the examples where there is a potential there," he told beIN Sports.
"But they have not found a collective way.
"Maybe these players are not mature enough to carry the team play of a team like Man United, altogether. That is the question mark now.
"You feel there is something coming out but it's not ready. When you watch them play, they are not a candidate to fight for the championship.
'Will they emulate what (Ryan) Giggs, (Paul) Scholes, (David) Beckham did over a number of years? Personally, I'm not convinced."
On Saturday, September 14 United welcome Leicester City to Old Trafford as the Premier League resumes.
Kick-off is at 16:00.
