The Houston Dynamo formally transferred veteran midfielder Nico Lodeiro to Club Nacional de Football, his boyhood Uruguayan team, on Tuesday.
Lodeiro, 36, appeared in his final game for the Dynamo on June 28 when he played five minutes off the bench. He had one goal and one assist in 16 MLS matches (six starts) this season.
Lodeiro was a key figure for the Seattle Sounders from 2016-23 and was part of title teams in 2016 and 2019. He scored four goals in the 2016 postseason and two in 2019. He has eight career postseason goals.
In the regular season, Lodeiro scored 41 goals for the Sounders.
Overall, Lodeiro has 43 goals and 12 assists in 241 MLS regular-season matches (201 starts) for the Sounders, Orlando City (2014) and Houston.
'Nico is one of the great competitors in the history of MLS, who has inspired others with his relentless work ethic, dedication to his teammates and will to win,' Dynamo president of soccer Pat Onstad said in a news release. 'We want to sincerely thank Nico for his contributions to the league and soccer in this country over the past decade, as well as his time with the Dynamo in Houston.
'From Day One, Nico has been up front with us about the potential of returning to his boyhood club, and we respect his desire to finish his incredible career in Uruguay.'
