Spanish legend and Inter Miami defender Jordi Alba announced Tuesday that he will retire at the end of the season.
Alba, 36, starred at Barcelona before reuniting with former teammates Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets with the Herons.
Alba's announcement comes just weeks after Busquets confirmed that he also will retire.
'The moment has come to close a truly meaningful chapter in my life. I've decided to bring my professional football career to an end at the conclusion of this season,' Alba said in a video posted on Instagram. 'I do so with complete conviction, peace and happiness. Because I feel I've walked this path with every ounce of passion I had and now it's the right time to open a new chapter and close the previous one with the best possible feeling.
'Football has given me absolutely everything. Thank you to my teammates, coaches, staff, club workers and rivals who pushed me to give my very best.'
Alba totaled 37 goals and 107 assists in 605 career matches across all competitions with Barcelona, helping the club secure six LaLiga titles and a Champions League win.
'To FC Barcelona, the club of my life. The one that saw me grow up as a child and allowed me to reach the peak of my career, live over a decade of unforgettable memories and win every possible title,' he said.
Alba collected 10 goals and 27 assists in 63 MLS matches (56 starts) with Miami since arriving in 2023, earning two All-Star selections.
'To Inter Miami, thanks for opening your doors and your kindness and for giving me the chance to enjoy this journey until the very last moment,' he said. 'Thank you to all the fans for your kindness, you taught me that the shirt isn't just worn, it's felt. Today I close this chapter knowing I've given it my all, football has been and always will be an essential part of my life. Thanks football for everything.'
Inter Miami managing owner Jorge Mas applauded Alba on a brilliant career.
'Jordi has been an exceptional addition to Inter Miami and one of the standout players in Major League Soccer over these two seasons. His experience, consistency, and attacking contribution have been very important to the Club's success. Beyond the goals and assists, he has been a great asset within the team and an exemplary professional. Those that know me know that family is the most important part of my life, and Jordi will forever be part of our Inter Miami family. We wish Jordi all the happiness in this new stage of his life.'
Inter Miami (17-7-8, 59 points) have two regular-season matches remaining before the MLS Cup playoffs. The Herons host Atlanta United on Saturday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., before finishing the slate at Nashville SC on Oct. 18.
